Battle of the Piney Woods Extended Through 2017; YP to Continue as Title Sponsor Through 2013

CBS Radio Houston to Broadcast Game Locally

HOUSTON — Lone Star Sports & Entertainment announced today that the annual Battle of the Piney Woods, presented by, will continue to be played at Reliant Stadium through the 2017 season. This year’s edition, which will be played this Saturday, Oct. 6, will be the third played in Houston. Saturday’s game will kick off at 3:00 p.m. CDT.

Additionally, YP has extended its contract as the title sponsor for the rivalry through the 2013 game. The local search, media and advertising company originally agreed to lend its name to the rivalry for two years beginning in 2011.

“The Battle of the Piney Woods has quickly become one of the great annual events on Houston’s sports calendar and we are excited to keep it here. Having the rivalry at a neutral site brings a great deal of energy and excitement to the game,” said Lone Star Sports & Entertainment General Manager Heather Houston. “We’re also grateful to our partners at YP, whose presence has provided stability and helped us continue to grow the game.”

For the first time, the Battle of the Piney Woods will be broadcast live in the Houston area this year, thanks to CBS Radio Houston’s SportsRadio 610. David Saltzman will call the game and former Houston Texans defensive lineman Seth Payne will provide game analysis, with SportsRadio 610 Sports Director Robert Henslee reporting from the sideline. SportsRadio 610 will air a 10-minute pregame show beginning at 2:50 p.m.

“This is a terrific local event that continues to grow each year,” said SportsRadio 610 Program Director Gavin Spittle. “We’re really excited as Houston’s Sports Leader to contribute to that growth by providing the same quality broadcasting as we do on gameday for the Texans and hopefully that comes through on the airwaves.”

Sam Houston State defeated Stephen F. Austin 45-10 last season before a crowd of 25,083 fans at Reliant Stadium. The crowd was the largest in the 86-year history of the rivalry and was the largest against a Football Championship Subdivision institution in both schools’ histories, topping the previous year’s record of 24,685.

The Battle of the Piney Woods dates back to 1923, making it the fourth-oldest college football rivalry in the state of Texas. Sam Houston State holds a 49-35-2 edge in the series following last year’s victory.
