2011 Gold Cup
The Gold Cup tournament hit Reliant Stadium in June of 2011 with one of the best matchups yet. With the winner of the tournament earning a birth to the Confederations Cup in 2013, Houston hosted the double-header semifinal matchup. The U.S. men’s national team opened the night with a 1 – 0 win over Panama from a late goal by Clint Dempsey. In the second game of the matchup was sent to overtime as Mexico and Honduras left the game scoreless in regulation. The Mexican offense found its fire early in extra time with Aldo de Nigris scoring in the 93 minute and Chicharito Hernandez concluding the match with a goal in the 99 minute.
