HOUSTON – The Battle of the Piney Woods presented by H-E-B returns to NRG Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 1 p.m. CT.

In 2016 and for the sixth-straight year, the Sam Houston State Bearkats defeated the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks 63-28 before a crowd of 27,411 fans at NRG Stadium. The crowd was the largest in the 90-plus-year history of the rivalry, topping the previous year’s record of 26,990.
The Battle of the Piney Woods dates back to 1923, making it the fourth-oldest college football rivalry in the state of Texas. Sam Houston State holds a 54-35-2 edge in the series following last year’s victory. The teams moved the annual game to Houston’s NRG Stadium in 2010 in a partnership with Lone Star Sports & Entertainment.
