Baylor Accepts Bid to Play in the Academy Sports + Outdoors Texas Bowl

Coach to Discuss Academy Sports + Outdoors Texas Bowl in Conference Call Today

HOUSTON – Baylor University has accepted the bid to play in the 2018 Academy Sports + Outdoors Texas Bowl, the bowl organizing committee announced today. Baylor will represent the Big 12 Conference. The 2018 Academy Sports + Outdoors Texas Bowl will be played on Thursday, Dec. 27, at 8 p.m. CT and will be televised nationally on ESPN.

“We are thrilled to announce the 2018 Academy Sports + Outdoors Texas Bowl Big 12 representative Baylor University, an excellent institution,” remarked Board Chair June Deadrick.  “The Bowl has grown into one of the largest annual events in our community and we’re excited to welcome Baylor to Houston.  We look forward to hosting the Bears and their passionate fan base for a festive bowl week of Texas-themed events that will culminate in a primetime showdown at NRG Stadium on December 27.”

Ticket prices for this game range from $25-200 and may be purchased online at www.academytexasbowl.com or www.ticketmaster.com, on the phone at 832-667-2390 or in person at the NRG Stadium box office inside Bud Light Plaza. The 2018 Academy Sports + Outdoors Texas Bowl will mark Baylor’s first visit since 2010 after a 38-14 loss to the University of Illinois. The team became bowl-eligible after a win over Texas Tech in the regular season finale. With a history of 23 bowl appearances, the Bears are 12-11 overall in postseason play. In their second season under Head Coach Matt Rhule, the team finished their regular season with a 6-6 overall record and 4-5 in the Big 12. After navigating a young roster through a difficult Big 12 schedule, Coach Rhule followed a one-win season with a six-win, bowl-bound year. The Baylor offense ranks 8th nationally with an average of 25.1 first downs per game (301 total).

The team’s bowl berth marks the program's ninth all-time appearance, and its sixth in the past 10 seasons. The Commodores are 4-3-1 all-time in postseason play and seek their first bowl victory since a 41-24 win over Houston in the 2014 BBVA Compass Bowl. Vanderbilt finished their regular season with a 6-6 record and 3-5 in the SEC in their fifth season under Head Coach Derek Mason. Mason is just the second coach in program history to send Vanderbilt to two bowls in a three-season span.

Concacaf Announces Venues and Dates for the 2019 Gold Cup Seeded Nations; All Venue Assignments Are Now Set

Miami (Friday, October 12, 2018) – The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf) today announced the venues and dates of the seeded nations in the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup, as well as all match dates for each venue of the 15th edition of the confederation’s continental championship.

Next summer’s tournament will be the first to feature an expanded version, with 16 countries vying for continental glory in what is set to be the largest Gold Cup in history. The seeded nations, the four highest ranked nations based on the Concacaf Ranking Index for September 2018 – in alphabetical order: Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico and the United States – and their respective groups, will play as follows:

Group A – Mexico
June 15: Rose Bowl, Pasadena, CA
June 19: Broncos Stadium at Mile High, Denver, CO
June 23: Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, NC

Group B – Costa Rica
June 16: Non-US venue to be determined
June 20: Toyota Stadium, Frisco, TX
June 24: Red Bull Arena, Harrison, NJ

Group C – Honduras

HOUSTON (Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2018) – Houston will host a doubleheader of quarterfinal matches on June 29, 2019 in the 15th edition of the confederation’s continental championship CONCACAF Gold Cup, the Confederation of North and Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) announced today in partnership with the Harris County – Houston Sports Authority, the Houston Dynamo and Lone Star Sports & Entertainment.

The Gold Cup is the official national team championship of the region, which includes North and Central America and the Caribbean, taking place biannually. The 2019 edition is the first to include an expanded version with 16 teams, allowing more teams from the region to shine on a regional and global stage. As this is the 15th edition of the tournament, a record 15 venues will host matches in 2019. H-E-B extends sponsorship OF THE BATTLE OF THE PINEY WOODS

HOUSTON – H-E-B is extending its relationship with Lone Star Sports and Entertainment as presenting sponsor of The Battle of the Piney Woods through the 2019 event, game officials announced today ahead of the rivalry’s 93rd edition on Saturday, Oct. 6.  The Battle of the Piney Woods presented by H-E-B is the annual football game between Southland Conference rivals Sam Houston State University and Stephen F. Austin State University played at NRG Stadium in Houston.

H-E-B became the game’s sponsor starting in 2015 before its 90th edition. This was also the same year that NRG Stadium became the permanent home for the rivalry after the City of Houston’s sixth time hosting the game.

In 2017, the Sam Houston State Bearkats defeated the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks 27-16 before a crowd of 26,792 fans at NRG Stadium. The Battle of the Piney Woods dates back to 1923, making it the third-oldest college football rivalry in the state of Texas. Sam Houston holds a 55-35-2 edge in the series following last year’s victory.
